Summer Camp 2022 Volunteer

About the Summer Camp

The Summer Camp offers day-camp programming throughout the summer to support recently arrived refugee children. In the company of peers with common backgrounds and experiences, campers are able to learn, grow and develop vital skills that will help them feel at home in Canada. Through sports, arts and crafts activities, and English language education, our Summer Camps support newcomer refugee children to build friendships, community, and confidence in the children. Our camp includes staff members that are fluent in a variety of languages, as well as members trained in specific sports and English language teachers.

Your Role

As a volunteer, you will support Camp Facilitator with the weekly sessions and activities. You will help set-up activities, lead students through numeracy and literacy games, set up sports activities and generally be a positive role model for respectful and fun learning. Special consideration will be given to applicants who are fluent in both English and either Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish, Spanish, Somali or Tigrinya and have experience working with newcomer children.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop effective written/verbal communication skills

  • Develop strategies to solve problems and select an appropriate course of action

  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills

  • Incorporate diverse teaching methods and strategies which are appropriate to addressing the needs of children

  • Work effectively with diverse age groups

  • Plan for and respond to issues of inclusion.

  • An interest and teaching and facilitating duties

Position Start Date & Expected Commitment

  • Time Commitment – 2 days per week from July 1 to August 31, 2021

  • Location – Surrey and Vancouver
